In July, I read three medical memoirs that completely changed my view on medicine.
These three books narrated the story of doctors and their journeys through their medical careers. They give us a glimpse into the good and the bad of the medical profession, offering us a deeper understanding of the challenges that doctors face daily.
I truly believe that if you are interested in pursuing medicine, you must read these books!
This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay
“This Is Going to Hurt” by Adam Kay is a hilarious and eye-opening memoir about his experiences as a junior doctor in the UK’s National Health Service. It’s filled with funny anecdotes and also sheds light on the challenges of the medical profession.
I highly suggest checking out the AMC series that’s based on this novel! It’s incredibly well done and definitely worth watching. Even though it’s a bit different from the book, it still captures the same magic that made the novel so memorable.
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande
“Being Mortal” by Atul Gawande is a thought-provoking book that explores the complexities of aging and end-of-life care. It delves into important topics like quality of life and the role of medicine.
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
This is my favourite book I’ve ever read. It’s truly a powerful and unforgettable read. It’s a powerful memoir that explores life, death, and the meaning of existence. The author, who was a neurosurgeon, shares his own experiences and reflections as he nears his death.
Conclusion
Here are a series of links to buy these novels through Amazon. I recommend checking them out. They’ve changed my perspective on medicine and I don’t think anything is more valuable than the knowledge I acquired from these books.
